Join us for Susan Wheatley Farewell Show at the Ironwood Stage & Grill Saturday September 11th, 2009

The Ironwood's own resident Chicks With Licks co-host, Susan Wheatley, has fallen in love and is moving to Australia with her
boyfriend and her drummer Nat De-Palma! Join us for her farewell show where she will be showcasing her new sound.  After her acoustic guitar lost/stolen in March Susan began borrowing the electric guitar at their rehearsal space and soon Susan and Nat realized that the electric transformed their sound in a good way, complimenting Nat's prog rock, lyrical drumming style. Susan's sound still has folk flavours but is now more on the rock side of folk-rock.  Throw in some psychedelia and prog rock beats from the 70s and that's where the music is evolving.

Joining Susan are some of Calgary's top musicians:
Jeff Drummond (guitar), Egor Ukoloff (keyboards), John Gray (bass), Nat De-Palma (drums)

Assembly of First Nation and a hockey...

Was a great fun and honor to play yesterday July 23rd for the celebration of the new nation chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo held in Calgary's Hyatt Regency. It's interesting that they specifically wanted to have a jazz band playing for the reception before and after the speeches.

Elder chiefs and new nation chief had speeches, with some singing and national dancers. The costumes were fantastic! (well... just a head feather hats).
Mr Shawn A-in-Chut presented himself as a very intellectual and educated person.

The highlight of the evening for me was meeting Ted Nolan who happened to be in the room too for the simple reason that he's a native American also. As you know Ted recently was a New York Rangers hockey team coach and now I believe is retired and back to Canada.

Till next time!!

Tonite at the Auburn

Phew! Been late nite last night. Was a short notice call to host a late nite jam at the Auburn Saloon... But lots of musicians showed up. I wish they would serve booze past 2 am. Don't we all?.. Had to call it off by 2:30 but there still was a lot of people and musicians wishing to play.

Tonite is the same thing. Late night jam for the Calgary jazz fest. Start about 11:00 ish or bit later. John Gray on bass and Karl Schwonik on drums will be joining me tonite to host as a jazz trio. Come down and bring a friend. Should be really busy and lots of festival participants will show up again!

The solo jazz piano recital on Wednesday was a joy to do. Quiet a few people showed up. The acoustics were fantastic! Tracy Kolenchuk posted some photos from this concert here:
