became a pop and R&B success, eventually earning the distinction of being the first black act of the era to top the pop charts. The Platters
was one of the top vocal groups of the rocking 1950s, selling 53 million records and among the first doo-wop
groups to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Their distinctive sound
was a bridge between the pre-rock Tin Pan Alley tradition and the burgeoning new genre
. The Platters released an amazing total of 38 singles.
